"When people write back it usually will tell us about the weather where Flat Stanley visited and how far it is from High Springs, including latitude and longitude." She said the class will keep track of distance and how far Stanley has traveled. "Some people put fabric on him and others just use crayons."Ĭhiozza said it's not just about promoting reading and writing, but also has a lot to do with geography and math skills. "We've gotten race car drivers and skiers back," she said. Then, Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to another school or person around the world who dresses him up according to where he's been, continue the journal and then send him back usually within a week or two. Students will cut out a paper "Flat Stanley" and begin a journal with him for a few days. The Flat Stanley Project is a modern-aged pen pal activity that students from local schools are participating in that provides them with a meaningful reason to write and to learn about different customs around the world.Ĭhiozza has participated in the Flat Stanley Project for about six years, and last year other second-grade teachers in the school got involved in the project, as well. Mary Chiozza and her second-grade class at High Springs Elementary School have sent Stanleys around the world as part of the Flat Stanley Project.įlat Stanley is a paper friend between students across the world. Flat Stanley has run a marathon, traveled to Iraq and cheered on the Notre Dame football team.
